Friesischer Heerweg – Tour (6 days)
Merely a few roads and paths cross the often almost untraversable Ostfriesland. One of these roads was the Friesischer Heerweg, the army road circling around the island. It still exists today. Along this route, you'll be travelling through time, experiencing the history of the country. You'll find the oldest proof of settlement in Ostfriesland. Not just mercenaries, armed with swords, morning stars and muzzles, roaming and pillaging the villages, but also merchants, villagers, priests, beggars and prostitutes travelled this road. Nature shows its influence, not just art and way of the people.
The historic "Frisian Army Road" still exists even today. It reaches across the varied landscape of the Ostfriesian peninsula with meadows, forests, moor, marsh and the Fehnland with its channels. There is evidence of history in the form of plenty of burial grounds, castles and churches. It is labelled as a the „Hellebarde und Wagenrad“ route along 400 kilometres and runs from Oldenburg to the North Sea coast, across the Ostfriesian inland. It is the longest continuous signposted bicycle of our peninsula.
