Deutsche Fehnroute – The small fen route (3 days)
The Ostfriesland countryside extends widely, flatly and evenly around the “Deutsche Fehnroute“ (the German moor route) – one of the most famous bicycle routes in Northern Germany. Hop onto your saddle and discover the culture across the 163 km round trip! The first traces of moor cultivation and fen settlement go back into the 17th century.
When you travel along the more than 200 year old channels dug by hand by the marsh pioneers, make sure to turn your attention to the left and right side – to the old “Gulfhäuser” or the typical white drawbridges. Many town names ending with „fehn“ (“marsh“ or “moor” in the Dutch language) represent historical proof of the old “marsh” times. Fully operative water gates, brick churches and splendid windmills are also witnesses of an impressive past.
In addition, several museums show interesting details of the fen culture history. In this region, sea travel had and still has a great importance. This is especially evident in the attractive main towns of Leer and Papenburg. Discover and experience the uniqueness of the German moor route!
