Cultivated landscape
Around 1000 AD., man began to dike the coast line. In the 13th century, for the first time there was a permanent dike line along the North Sea coast.
The dikes made it possible for the people to settle down from the dwelling mounts into the deeper lying marsh regions and to build new villages.
