German marine museum in Wilhelmshaven
Wilhelmshaven is a marine station since 1869. Since that date, the harbor has been extended several times to correspond to the growing needs of the German marine in the past. Of course, due to being a naval base and shipyard site, both world wars affected the town in a very brutal way. Many of the inhabitants were marine soldiers, many of which did not return from the wars.
The German marine museum tells the story of the origins of the Imperial marine until it became the the greatest marine station of Germany. It thus indirectly also tells the story of Wilhelmshaven. Accessible exhibits like the submarine ex U 10 or the destroyer ex „Mölders“ (in preperation), help interested visitors experience the particular circumstances of marine everyday life at sea: The lack of space, artificial lighting and the immediate closeness to people and technology characterize the atmosphere below deck. In contrast, the permanent exhibition is designed in a light and sober objectiveness.
