Hanken farm in Bockhorn-Steinhausen

Hanken farm in Bockhorn-Steinhausen

Steinhausen is situated between marsh area and Geest. For a long time, the Gulfhaus was the farmhouse of the marsh regions, but on the Geest, until the 19th century, the Lower German Hallenhaus (hall house) was predominating. Some of them can still be found in the village.

But in 1721 already, a progressive farmer at Steinhausen decided to build a modern Gulfhaus which existed until that date only in the nearby marsh area. This Gulfhaus today belongs to the family Hanken and is worth seeing because of its beautiful and extraordinarily well preserved appearance. The thatched roof is mighty, the massive brick building and elements of the half-timber construction are very interesting: the consoles, strong and profiled in a “baroque” style, on which the hip of the living-house gable is built, certainly refer to examples of half-timber construction.

Thus, the Hanken house is an example of transition in several aspects: on the one hand, the replacement of the hall house by the gulf house, on the other hand the transition from half-timber to massive brick construction. The construction date could be calculated by analyzing the timber – a good result for house historians.
