Castle "Evenburg" in Leer-Loga

Castles

Spend your holidays where once the noble lived. Today, the motto prevails: „Eala Frya Fresena – Welcome, free Friesians.“ Farmer’s municipalities – farm republics – formed a kind of “Friesian UN” of the Middle Ages. They developed strategies to defend Friesian liberty and discussed Friesian law issues. The “Thingstätte“ Upstalsboom at Aurich-Rahe reminds of the ancient assembly place of envoys of the “Sieben Seelande” (seven sea lands).

In the middle of the 14th century, Friesian liberty made way for the reign of chiefs (later counts and princes). They rallied followers and built castles and citadels. This was done to strengthen their power – and to make tourists happy today. Dive into Friesian history: search for traces of tradition and culture of the East Friesians behind brick walls and moats. The particularity here is that some of the historic walls house descendants of  ancient nobility. And they have the same problems as all others to preserve the monuments. Events – sometimes the locations are used as film backgrounds – help to collect money to preserve the historic buildings from aging.
